Central PA APP CME Day
The UPMC Central PA CME Day is going to be a half day event for all APPs in the region to participate in to gain CME hours. It is being planned by the Central PA APPAC APP Education Committee and will have a variety of topics as lectures for the day including Diet Management in Chronic Disease, ID Panel discussion and a talk given by Palliative Care regarding difficult conversations amongst other topics.

Learning Objectives
- Identify common causes of antibiotic overuse in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Apply evidence-based guidelines to optimize antibiotic selection, dosing, and duration.
- Recognize the role of APPs in reducing antimicrobial resistance.
- Collaborate with interprofessional teams to implement stewardship strategies in clinical practice.
- Understand the role of nutrition in managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
- Identify effective dietary counseling strategies tailored to diverse patient populations.
- Interpret and apply current dietary guidelines and evidence-based interventions.
- Collaborate with dietitians and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive care plans.
- Recognize common barriers to effective communication in challenging clinical situations.
- Apply structured communication techniques (e.g., SPIKES, NURSE) to deliver difficult news with empathy and clarity.
- Demonstrate strategies to support patients and families during emotionally charged interactions.
- Strengthen interprofessional communication and role clarity during complex discussions.
- Review current FDA-approved pharmacologic options for weight management.
- Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and indications of new weight loss medications.
- Identify appropriate patient candidates for pharmacologic therapy.
- Integrate weight loss medications into a multidisciplinary treatment plan, including lifestyle and behavioral interventions.
