Addiction Medicine Lecture Day 2023

UPMC Mercy’s Addiction Medicine Lecture Day will consist of six lectures covering a breadth of topics relevant to the health promotion and maintenance of persons living with substance use disorders. Our focus will be on meeting individuals where they are, from reducing harm to maintaining recovery.

Target Audience

Physicians, RNs, Care Management, Social Workers, all healthcare professionals working in communities and/or with individuals impacted by addiction.

Learning Objectives

Session One: Bringing Care To People: Building a Continuum of Care Learning Objectives: 1.  Understand substance use and overdose statistics and trends, 2.  Discuss evidence-based treatment and harm reduction interventions, 3.  Summarize services available along the continuum of care to ensure patient access to services.

Session Two: Introduction to Harm Reduction Services Learning Objectives: 1. Define and summarize the principles of harm reduction 2. Discuss the importance and impact of harm reduction practices at patient and population-level outcomes 3. Describe safer use best practices for different routes of administration 4. Explain practical implementation strategies for integrating harm reduction in the clinical setting.

Session Three: Xylazine 101 Learning Objectives: 1. Review the trends of xylazine in U.S. drug supply 2. Recognize common physiologic effects and drug-related harms in persons using xylazine 3. Review harm reduction strategies for patients who are at risk of drug-related harms with xylazine.

Session Four: Treating Opioid Use Disorder During Fentanyl Crisis 1. Describe existing challenges in acute care for patients with current OUD 2. Provide insight into current strategies for initiating patients on medications for OUD 3. Discuss ongoing structural and social challenges to initiating and sustaining recovery for patients living with OUD.

Session Five: Delirium – Delirium in the Alcohol Withdrawal Patient Learning Objectives: 1. Identify delirium and risk factors 2. Differentiate delirium vs psychiatric disorders – specifically Alcohol withdrawal delirium 3. Identify appropriate treatments for alcohol withdrawal delirium.

Session Six: Moving Ahead Together Learning Objectives: 1. Describe barriers to addiction/SUD care in Pennsylvania 2. Describe efforts at expanding evidence-based treatment as well as harm reduction.
