Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT) is a trauma-informed evidence-based treatment (EBT) designed to improve the relationships between children and caregivers in families involved in arguments/conflict, physical force/discipline/aggression, child physical abuse, or child behavior problems. AF-CBT training is offered using a structured Supported Learning Community format delivered in three parts listed below. All three parts are required in order to be considered fully trained in AF-CBT.
• Part 1: Foundations of AF-CBT via the NCTSN Academy Learning Center
• Part 2: AF-CBT Professional Skills Training (that's this course!)
• Part 3: AF-CBT Consultation Calls with Experts in the Field (more information on this later)

Learning Objectives

1. Describe AF-CBT's goals and processes to participants.  
2. Learn and use background information on the caregiver, their family, and their family’s treatment history to inform AF-CBT treatment.  
3. Briefly probe caregiver and child willingness and comfort to discuss referral.  
4. Build alliance with the child by discussing treatment expectations and identifying goals.  
5. Prepare family for sessions by describing structure, schedule, and facilitators/barriers to treatment participation.  
6. Explain how you will use the procedures of weekly safety check-ins and home practice.  
7. Identify obstacles to home practice and solutions to overcome those obstacles.
