Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this event, participants should be able to: * name and describe the first 2 starges of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy); * list 3 ways to build rapport with patients through life review techniques; * describe how to integrate ACT when using life review; * assess and navigate callenging cases of impaired or uncertain decision-making capacity in seriously ill patients using structured clinical and ethical frameworks; * identify appropriate surrogate decision-makers and apply principles of substituted judgment and best interest standards when patients lack capacity; * name at least 3 legal and ethical considerations around guardianship, health care proxies, and documentation; * recognize the diagnostic challenges in identifying depression and anxiety in patients with serious or life limiting illness; * differentiate between normative emotional responses, demoralization, and psychiatric illness in patients with serious illness; * apply evidence-based strategies in both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for managing mood and anxiety disorders in patients with complex medical illness; * define common radiation oncology terms (e.g., IMRT, SBRT, IGRT, protons) and describe how they relate to treatment planning and delivery in palliative settings; * summarize the clinical indications and evidence supporting the use of radiation therapy for symptom management in patients with advanced illness (e.g., pain, bleeding, neurologic compromise); * describe the components of a radiation therapy plan, including factors influencing modality choice, treatment duration, and expected outcomes, to better facilitate interdisciplinary communication and patient counseling.
