At the end of the conference the learner will be able to:

1. Identify symptoms and define the diagnosis of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

2. Identify strategies to improve patients with feeding difficulties due to texture sensitivities

3. Explain when noisy breathing intersects with feeding difficulties

4. Identify causes and treatments for bottle aversion

5. Identify two feeding challenges children with palate abnormalities may experience

              Learners will….

  • Identify 2 symptoms of ARFID.
  • Differentiate between ARFID and other feeding and eating disorders.
  • Identify referral pathway for diagnosis and treatment.

 

11:30-12:15:   Myth Busters in Feeding, Katie White, SLP-CCC, and Nicole Orlando, OT

Learners will….

  • List three popular myths related to feeding.
  • Critically analyze feeding advice and differentiate between scientifically supported facts and myths.
  • List two examples of education for patients and families related to debunked myths.

 

LUNCH 12:15-1:00*

1:00-2:00: Noisy Breathing and Feeding, Zachary Bennett, MD and Kristin Cangilla, SLP-CCC

              Learners will…

  • Identify 3 different types of noisy breathing.
  • Identify when noisy breathing is concerning.  
  •  Identify when and where to refer based on type breathing.  
  • Identify feeding concerns/risks in setting of noisy breathing.  
  • Learners will identify one feeding modifications in setting of noisy breathing.  

 

2-2:45:

Purees and how to progress texture in texture sensitive patients, Maria Lohmann, Katie (Kathryn) Habovick, OT

Learners will…

  • Name oral motor skills and signs of readiness necessary to tolerate a variety of textures.
  • Describe typical progression of food textures.
  • Identify feeders who may have a sensitivity or aversion to textures.
  • Identify 3 ways that textures may be progressed in populations with sensitivities or aversions to textures.
  • Name foods to add to purees to increase the caloric density.
  • Explain the contributions of purees toward total daily fluid intake.

 2:45-3:00 Break*

3:00-4:00 : Bottle Feeding Aversion: A Protocol, Devan Zapadka FNP-C, MSN, CPEN, Kaitlin Carpenter, SLP-CCC

              Learners will….

  • Define bottle feeding aversion. 
  • Identify three "subtle" forms of pressure that caregivers may unknowingly give their babies when feeding. 
  • Identify three populations that are at greater risk for developing a bottle feeding aversion. 
  • Identify the five steps of the Bottle Feeding Aversion Protocol.

 

 4:00- 5:00: Feeding Issues with Cleft Palate, Matt Ford, MS, SLP-CCC, Kate Apgar, MS, SLP-CCC

              Learners will….

  • Name 2 feeding challenges in orofacial cleft.
  • Explain the need of assistive feeding bottles for infants with cleft
  • Identify the appearance of orofacial clefts.
