International Fontan Symposium
The International Fontan Symposium will bring world renowned pediatric and adult cardiologists, congenital cardiac surgeons, and adult cardiac and transplant surgeons together for a deep dive into the evolution of management strategies in this complex patient population, including medical therapy, transcatheter interventions, rhythm-management device implantation, surgical intervention, and heart or combined organ transplantation. Emerging technologies and techniques for cardiac imaging in these patients will be explored in depth. Further, lifestyle considerations for patients living with Fontan such as exercise, pregnancy, and mental health will also be discussed.
Target Audience
This course is designed for pediatric and adult cardiologist, congenital cardiac surgeons, adult cardiac surgeons, trainees, heart failure specialists, advanced practice providers, nurses, perfusionists, researchers, data professionals, healthcare administrators, non-profit professionals, medical students, and any other interested member of the heart care team.
Learning Objectives
1. To review the Fontan operation’s current long-term outcomes.
2. To identify practices to improve the long-term outcomes including exercise, screening for end-organ disease, improving neurodevelopment practices, resilience, and family planning.
3. To identify strategies for the management of Fontan circulatory failure and timing of more invasive therapies.
4. End-of-life issues and managing tough decisions post-Fontan.
Emerging Fontan circulation and heart failure/transplantation clinical, translational, and basic science research will be featured in an abstract poster session contest.
