Update in Internal Medicine (UIM) 2026: Practice Changing Advances
Each year, the Department of Medicine hosts its annual this 2-day educational course. Throughout the years, the event has averaged over 300 attendees, including general internists, family practitioners, advanced practice providers, physician assistants, nurses/nurse practitioners, pharmacists, students, and other healthcare professionals. The course provides a comprehensive update on major advances in internal medicine as well as a review of various medical-and surgical-related topics impacting daily practice from a panel of nationally recognized faculty. Participants also receive updates on disease practice activities. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based approaches to practical and innovative healthcare delivery, including care pathways that emphasize key elements in the diagnosis and management of various diseases. The course fosters the cooperation, coordination, and collaboration of professionals of different medical specialties in delivering cost-effective, patient-centered care.

Learning Objectives
-Define care management pathways for common diseases encountered in primary care including dyspnea, prostate cancer, depression, chronic kidney disease, dementia, hypersomnia, obesity, and dermatology challenges.
-Synthesize current scientific evidence for managing cerebrovascular disease, motility disorders of the GI tract, atrial arrhythmias, acute pain in the hospitalized patient with substance use disorders, smoking cessation, and antibody screening in rheumatic disorders.
-Analyze the impact and outcomes of newer anticoagulation agents, medical marijuana, preventive cardiology, medication use in the elderly population, home antibiotic management, travel medicine, and sharing your DNA for analysis.
