UPMC Mercy’s Addiction Medicine Lecture Day will consist of seven lectures covering a breadth of topics relevant to health promotion and maintenance of persons living with addiction, with a focus on the hospital as an engagement opportunity. Lecturers consist of UPMC toxicologists, internal medicine physicians, psychiatrists, peer navigators and addiction specialists in nursing and social work. The overall aim is to bring together stakeholders from the region to present and discuss best practices and enhance stakeholder collaboration across settings of care.
Target Audience
Physicians, RNs, Care Management, Social Workers, all healthcare professionals working in communities and/or with individuals impacted by addiction.
Learning Objectives
Engaging Patients and Families in Recovery
Learning Objectives:
- Describe key principles of motivational interviewing
- Describe the importance of goal setting for patients
- Understand how to engage patients in harm reduction
Current Drugs of Misuse and Withdrawal Management
Learning Objectives:
- List current common drugs of misuse
- Describe the health impacts of the drugs of misuse
- Understand clinical applicability for varying approaches to alcohol withdrawal management
Pain in Patients Taking Medication for Opioid Use Disorder
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the prevalence of chronic pain among individuals with opioid use disorders
- Propose non-opioid treatments to address pain in patients with OUD
- Develop a plan to manage pain in individuals receiving MOUD who are undergoing procedures
Overdose: Evaluation, Treatment, and Harm Reduction
Learning Objectives:
- Understand substance use and overdose statistics and trends
- Discuss evidence-based treatment and harm reduction interventions
- Summarize services available along the continuum of care to ensure patient access to services
The Face of Addiction
Learning Objectives:
- Identify addiction as a disease process
- Understand resources available to aid in treatment
- Provide outreach and empathy to afflicted persons
Individuals with Dual Diagnosis
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the psychiatric and unique substance use needs of patients with dual diagnosis
- Understand best practices for the management of medical and behavioral concerns while inpatient
- Understand the outpatient service landscape for patients with dual diagnosis
Levels of Care for Addiction Medicine
Learning Objectives:
- Participants can apply the ASAM levels of care to patients needing addiction-related services
- Participants understand the various levels of care for addiction
- Understand how to promote access to various services throughout SWPA for patients needing addiction-related treatment
