UPMC Shadyside Hospital is the oncology hub for patients seeking care due to its proximity to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. UPMC Shadyside Hospital has a 50-bed emergency department (ED) that cares for more than 50,000 patients annually. It is no surprise that approximately 25% of visits are for oncology related issues. This led to a collaboration between Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Shadyside’s emergency department. The plan was to have oncology trained Advance Practice Providers (APPs) care for this complex population.
